Quiet Remedies

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have a collection of grade school report cards that tactfully include remarks like, "Christy never shuts up." Christy wears her heart on her sleeve, has no control over her facial expressions, and says whatever she's thinking. Everyone always knows how she feels.

Thankfully, that's all true. It's given me people and stories that fuel my art-- a curiosity to try to understand everything better and spill it onto canvas. Lately, I've been thinking a lot about how tiring it is to just exist-- to meet the relentless expectations we seem submerged in. It's a conversation I find myself having again and again with other women.

It's exhausting, in both big and small ways, to cooperate with life. How we cope, grieve, perceive, and process the strange places we find ourselves in is intensely personal, yet deeply relatable. Rather than chasing the elusive "better" version of ourselves that society demands, we should probably talk to each other more. We deserve our own versions of peace. "Quiet Remedies" considers how we, as women, sustain ourselves and find hope in each other, even when we're very, very tired.

"Quiet Remedies" was a solo exhibition at GWFA Gallery that opened in November of 2024.
